Annual Forage 2026: Rainfall Protection for Kansas Producers

Jun 24, 2025

The Annual Forage program is a valuable risk management tool designed to protect Kansas producers from the impact of unusually low rainfall. It provides coverage for acreage planted annually and used for:
-          Grain/grazing
-          Grazing/green chop
-          Grazing
-          Grazing/haying
-          Green chop/haying
-          Haying
-          Silage
This program is only for annual crops, and all acreage of a crop must be insured to qualify.

Who Is Eligible?
Producers in Kansas and seven other states, Colorado, New Mexico, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Texas, can participate in the Annual Forage program.

How It Works
Instead of using county lines, the program uses 14x16 mile grids to monitor rainfall. Producers select at least two index intervals, each representing a two-month period. If rainfall in your grid falls below the historical average (the Trigger Value) during one of your selected intervals, you'll receive an indemnity payment.

Important Dates
The Sales Closing Date is July 15, 2025. By this date, you must:
-          Submit a new application (if you're a first-time participant)
-          Choose your coverage level, productivity factor, index intervals, and percent of value for each interval
Additional notes:
-          There are four growing seasons based on planting dates
-          Acreage cannot be insured in consecutive seasons
-          Four acreage reporting dates apply
-          Some states have limits on productivity factors and percent of value

Wind & Green Snap Coverage: Protect Your Crops from Storm Damage

Kansas producers know that spring weather can be unpredictable, and 2025 has already brought its share of severe storms. That's why it's critical to consider Wind and Green Snap coverage as part of your risk management strategy.

What Is It?
Wind and Green Snap are endorsements to Crop Hail Insurance that provide added protection against wind-related damage:
-          Green Snap: Specifically covers corn stalk breakage caused by strong winds, which can render the crop unharvestable.
-          Wind Coverage: Offers broader protection, including Green Snap, and extends to additional commodities beyond corn.

Why It Matters
With active weather patterns across Kansas, the risk of wind damage is high. These coverages help safeguard your investment and ensure your operation can recover from storm-related losses.

Deadline Approaching
The sales closing date for Wind and Green Snap coverage is mid-to-late June. Don't wait until it's too late.

The newly signed One Big Beautiful Bill Act brings major updates to crop insurance, expanding premium subsidies and redefining "beginning" and "veteran" farmers as those with less than 10 years of experience. Key changes include higher coverage levels, increased premium support, and added funding for new policy development. Producer Ag is reviewing the bill and will continue to support producers through these transitions.
